It’s not hard to understand or see why death metal is still as strong as it is simply because we are living in what can easily be described as a golden age of the underground with how many releases we have at our fingertips now thanks to the internet. Yet, given the sheer quantity of it all, we still gotta do some digging for the good stuff. I’ve no problem with that as the good stuff is always worth looking for, but oddly enough it was Transcendence who came to me, and I couldn’t have asked for a better offering of slimy death metal.
Death metal is often described as filthy, and that’s an apt word if it’s applied to the right band, but so many people just throw it around with any band that comes to focus, and I’m one of them from time to time. But to call “Hour of the Summoning” anything other than filthy would be an absolute understatement as Transcendence brings that classic old school death metal feel to a modern execution of the style that really allows these four tracks to stand out like few others. Right from the beginning, there are no survivors with “Hour of the Summoning” truly taking its time to mutilate those who dare to enter the halls that belong to Transcendence, and by the end, you’re nothing but a pulsating mass of flesh begging for more of cavernous death metal that doesn’t let a single moment go to waste between monstrous riffs and pure annihilation. There’s incredibly little that Transcendence doesn’t do incredibly well within these four tracks as they easily establish themselves as an act that already knows how to create death metal with real power and presence before releasing even a single full-length album, and hopefully, that means only great things in the future.
I always see EPs like “Hour of the Summoning” as but a stepping stone for the band in question as them trying to find their sound, but with “Hour of the Summoning” it’s clear that Transcendence has found their sound and is already fucking immaculate at it! There are many bands that demand to have a close eye kept on them, and Transcendence is without a doubt one of them with their vicious approach that is naught but incredibly satisfying!
