Going through the promos that we reviewers constantly get, we get many choice words thrown our way that are purely meant to grasp our attention to convince us to investigate the material in question. Words like “masterpiece” and phrases such as “best work to date” get thrown around so often that they really seem to lose their initial power. Very few albums live up to being described as “highly anticipated” for me, but there is no better phrase to describe the upcoming Morbid Messiah in such few words.
It was with their EP, “In the Name of True Death Metal”, a few years ago that really got my undivided attention for Morbid Messiah as that album was the very definition of a surprise and something that I simply wanted to hear more of. Not a single thing different is done with what Morbid Messiah brings to the table but it’s played with such conviction, passion, and executed with such talent that nothing new needs to be done stylistically to make Morbid Messiah such a tantalizing treat. That trend only continues and is somehow enhanced by the unearthly creation that is “Demonic Paroxysm” and the nine unholy testaments that Morbid Messiah deliver with such devastation that the earth is nothing but scorched in the aftermath. We’re treated to a truly delicious heap of seething death metal that comes from the very sewer that the first acts crawled out of, and yet Morbid Messiah channels a seemingly forgotten, long-untouched power in the dark realm of classic death metal to allow “Demonic Paroxysm” to become one of the vilest, nastiest, and downright evil death metal records that we’ve seen for quite some time. Bouncing from one track to another brings you to another ring of hell before immediately whiplashing you to another for more rounds of flailing via Morbid Messiah’s unmerciful fury that knows only how to grow.
There’s no other way to put it: only the stern and weathered should tackle what Morbid Messiah has conjured with their first full-length album. “Demonic Paroxysm” is nothing the weak-minded or uninitiated should even think about experiencing as Morbid Messiah has created a true storm of pure black darkness that only knows consummation to the highest degree, and all nine waves make it one hell of a fucking ride all the way to the very end.
“Demonic Paroxysm” releases on October 22nd via Memento Mori!
