There’s always the weird and ever-expanding world of progressive metal to turn to whenever you simply want the energy and ridiculousness of your metal turned up to an absolute eleven right off the bat. The style is always creating crazy new and broad horizons with so many different bands even taking other styles into consideration for an even crazier effect. Progressive death metal has become a real phenomenon in certain circles, and it’s bands like MetaVoid that’s to thank for that craze.
Apparently, there’s a real surge of concept albums in progressive metal that has just flown completely over my head somehow. I’ve always been a big fan of concept albums because I love a good story, and feeling a theme throughout an album can really tie it all together incredibly nicely to where the whole of the record is a glorious experience. And while the five tracks that make up “Heliosophist” are distinctive in their own rights and all that, MetaVoid goes the extra mile and makes this upcoming EP feel like a single track across the entirety of its 25-minute runtime. Going into “Heliosophist” isn’t a real challenge as it’s quite typical for a prog-death record by many accounts with soaring solos, brutal vocals, flashy riffs along with blistering speed, and magnificent instrumentation. Yet, every progressive album is unique and I love it simply because it’s so fun to see how crazy and interesting the band in question can make their brand of metal sound. MetaVoid did an incredibly solid job with “Heliosophist” as I never found myself bored or felt like the band was basically jerking each other off trying to sound really big without having any depth whatsoever.
This band accomplishes in their very early stages of being an act that is incredibly important: learning how to perform your sound, and make it feel unique versus just copying a band like Obscura out of laziness. That’s a very easy thing to do that some go for, but many like MetaVoid like creating an entity of their own, and this EP is definitely something this band should be proud of. While I can’t go crazy over “Heliosophist”, I can very happily say it’s a class record from start to finish that marks this band as one that shouldn’t be underestimated.
“Heliosophist” releases on October 19th!
