Every now and then, notable musicians come together and create a group that has nothing but promise with the attention of many fans from all over eagerly waiting to see the first taste of the new creation. I usually try not to get too excited about those things because I don’t want to get disappointed, but discovering Dead Now was a complete surprise for me and to say their debut album is anything less than fabulous would be an insult.
It can be really hard to make stoner rock good without being a real cookie-cutter or simply sounding bland. You need to spice things up a little bit, and while most bands understand this every one of them has a specific formula that helps their music feel original as well as grasping the attention of the listener entirely. Right off the bat, it’s clear that Dead Now understands that all the way as this trio comes from various different bands that all have quite the reputation, and you can really feel that on their eponymous debut. With but five tracks to throw around, this album shows off a glorious display of fuzzy riffs, gripping melodies, loads of fun that penetrates every note, and top-tier musicianship that cannot be touched for a moment. Dead Now allows each track to sound practically the same as they clearly know the core sound they’re going for already, but they perfectly execute just enough diversity and variety amongst each track that you’re never really hearing the same thing twice. That’s a skill few can manage, but it’s clear that Dead Now can achieve it incredibly easily in no less than utmost style.
There are always a ton of new bands that people should know about for a multitude of reasons be it either bringing death metal back to its golden days or pushing the boundaries of metal and music itself. But I firmly believe that people should know of Dead Now not just because they’re talented, but because their music is just so much fun to listen to. That’s something so many people skip right over for no good reason, but to listen to Dead Now is to have a good time, and I can’t wait to hear more!
