Dead Sisters – s/t

The art of drawing out a sound to stretch over ten, twenty, thirty, and even more minutes is something that not many feel up to the task for, but it’s with doom metal that we see people willing to tackle such an obstacle. And for the crazier part of that community, we have drone metal that almost if not always takes over an hour just to listen to one album with a handful of tracks on it. With their debut piece, Dead Sisters make one hell of an entrance into the realm of drone.

There’s a surprising number of people out there who firmly believe that many Christian-themed or bands of the like are not good simply because they’re hailing God and Jesus in a positive light versus as opposed to spurning them. I’ve always respected metal for its harsh themes of all kinds and being able to make creative works out of that, but it’s because of bands like Dead Sisters that we still get to see interesting metal made with seeing religion in a more positive light, and I find that refreshing, personally. That being said, Dead Sisters still brings an incredibly harsh and unforgiving attitude to the table with their eponymous debut, and just looking at the lengths of each song reflects that. The shortest being just under 16 minutes and the longest stretching over 37 minutes, Dead Sisters epitomizes the crazy lengths of drone metal incredibly well and the drawn-out rhythms along with the constant assault that comes in waves make for an engaging listen. Dead Sisters know just when to pepper in enough change to make this album feel organic instead of the same sound the entire time, but it does take some patience to get through this piece, to say the least. But, like many drawn-out albums, should you overcome the challenge I can almost guarantee satisfaction.

The world of drone is something that can still be considered incredibly niche even taking into consideration the more well-known acts of the style. But it’s thanks to bands like Dead Sisters that the style is kept alive and exploring different horizons for fresh flavors. If this debut is anything to go off of, then this band will continue to bask in the glory of their savior and inspire them to create greater bodies of work that make this one look like a mere stepping stone.
