There are always albums that I see circulating on Bandcamp that I see getting a lot of attention and praise to which I tell myself I’ll get around to listening to it but never do for any number of reasons. Earlier this year it was Soul Dissolution who really surprised many people and is still on my list of records to listen to if I run out of stuff, but something else has caught my attention from this act. Just when we think they’d be reshuffling their cards, Soul Dissolution surprises us with two tracks that are all but delectable.
A big problem that I’ve noticed in the deep realm of atmospheric black metal is the balancing between the two main sounds usually isn’t done well be it the band is putting too much focus on one, simply doesn’t care for the other all that much or anything of the like. Yet, Soul Dissolution was a name that I vividly remember wanting to come back to since their 2016 album, “Pale Distant Light”, was a real nice tease for the talent these Belgians had. Listening to “Nowhere”, it’s clear that this act has achieved the sound I knew they could with the talent I knew they had and that’s a boon that’s oh so sweet to behold! Immersive is a really good keyword for these two tracks as Soul Dissolution don’t shy away from allowing the listener to drift away on clouds of pure atmospheric ecstasy that’s sandwiched ever so nicely between slabs of black metal that feels so organic. “Nowhere” is constantly shifting and moving forward with its sound such that Soul Dissolution is showing another side to their glory every few minutes be it through an immersive atmosphere, post-metal inspired riffs or even the riveting black metal vocals.
I have not heard a single second off of “Stardust” despite everyone going absolutely apeshit over the record, but I do not hesitate in saying that “Nowhere” can be easily heralded as the best record Soul Dissolution has dished out and they should be well proud of such a glorious EP. If you like what this band has created thus far, then this EP is just for you. And now, if you’d excuse me, I need to finally listen to “Stardust” and I already know I love it.
“Nowhere” releases on October 18th!
