Revocation – The Outer Ones

The lifetime of an album cycle can really make or break a band. Spend too much time between records and you can risk losing interest from fans or begin to want to do different things instead, but spend too little time between new albums and you can risk burning yourself out especially in the quality of your material. An album every two years can be risky for any band, and while some fail over time some manage to overcome the challenge with relative ease. Revocation is undoubtedly one of the latter.

With their last two albums, Revocation still held their grand status as one of the greats of modern tech-death, but the quality was slightly diminished if you ask me. Don’t get me wrong, I still think they’re fantastic albums, but I started to fear that the band had started to go into a downward motion with their quality. But like many things, the universe was bent on proving me wrong so Revocation busted out the book of evil and smashed out “The Outer Ones”. And in every fucking way imaginable, this record is an absolute treat to behold from that tantalizing cover art to the obvious Lovecraft-inspired theme to a beautiful return to form for Revocation. Bringing back the technical death metal chaos that made this band such a need-to-know name to begin is back at full force with these nine tracks being everything a fan of Revocation should be salivating for. Brimming with intensity and technical prowess galore, there’s very little that “The Outer Ones” doesn’t accomplish be its fantastic display of instrumentation, vocals that are the very essence of other-worldly madness, or even the catchier pieces like the end of “Luciferous” where Revocation switches things up a little bit but still sticks to their guns. And by the end of drifting through this cosmic hellhole, you’ll only want to dive back in for another taste because Revocation has truly created something special with “The Outer Ones” the likes of which we’ve been desperately needing for years. So many bands had the opportunity and capability to fill the spot, but it’s only fitting that Revocation delivered the goods yet again.

This was one of the first death metal bands that really caught my eye when I was but a budding metalhead, and years later I’m so happy to know that Revocation hasn’t lost their way with this album being a testament to that. “The Outer Ones” can already be considered one of the best albums of the genre that we’re going to get by the end of the year, and I know for a fact that many already have it as one of their favorites for the year.
