The vicious world of grind is one that I seldom visit simply because I’ve never been real big into just a sheer wall of massive presence, but I’ve never been opposed to checking it out. I’m always looking for new things and bands to hopefully expand my taste albeit sparingly. It’s been a hot minute since I dipped my toes into grind so I figured why not lift the lid a little and see what’s there. Husmanskost is what greeted me with their fiery and downright murderous upcoming album of pure hate.
Easily the thing that I covet the most from grind overall is how little downtime there is. I can always appreciate a style that does not mess around for even a second and will always go for the throat no matter what. That’s practically every single band that grind has in a nutshell, but some just feel much better as they incorporate riffs and hold back just the tiniest bit to where we’re not until constant heavy fire but are still directly under pressure. That’s exactly what Husmanskost does with their upcoming album of “Ambi-Valence” when you boil it all down. Everything about this ten-track rager of an album pulls no punches but isn’t afraid to add in the occasional riff in order to bring some new flavors and intrigue into the mix whereas so many other grind acts would either cut the song right before the riff or simply continue doing the same exact thing. Yet, no matter what the song whether or not I found it to my liking I kept loving how well Husmanskost was able to keep everything moving without allowing a moment of the album become stale by any means. That’s another thing grind has always done incredibly well, and “Ambi-Valence” replicates it wondrously. I’m far from any sort of expert on the violence that is grind, but if there was an album I’ve heard that is all but true to the original formula then it would absolutely have to be “Ambi-Valence” without a doubt.
Sometimes enjoyment can come from the least expected of places especially when it comes to music, and that goes double for grind with me as me and grind don’t really have the best of relationships, but I’m doing my best to improve my status with her bit by bit. Husmanskost has created an absolute bulldozer with these ten tracks and anyone who wants to hear grind that comes straight from the seething underground should look no further than “Ambi-Valence”.
“Ambi-Valence” releases on September 17th!
