Mother Feather – Constellation Baby

A few years ago, Mother Feather was easily one of the bigger surprises that I was gifted from the ever illustrious Metal Blade who many of us never would’ve guessed put this record out. It was a clearly pop rock album that focused more on the rock than the pop but the elements were clearly there. But aside from all that, Mother Feather made their debut organic and fun and thus a great listen for me to this very day! Learning their follow-up would be out this year was great news for me, and after days of jamming this, I’m ecstatic to know they’re still an awesome listen!

With a much more flamboyant cover, I felt like Mother Feather was going to go for a style that was somehow even more colorful and weird than their debut overflowing with carefree, feel-good jams that are all but infectious. That attitude thankfully still permeates every song of “Constellation Baby”, but instead of going for a wilder sound Mother Feather instead opts for an evolved take that shows more intoxicating rhythms and brilliant musicianship that really knows when to strike and when to hold back for maximum flavor. We’re treated to some songs on the slightly serious side such as the title track but Mother Feather still knows how to have high-octane levels of fun consisted of riffs and yet again amazing vocals that hit their mark perfectly every single time in their versatility shown in tracks like “Totally Awesome”, “Desert Island”, and “Snakebite”. And much like their debut, Mother Feather didn’t immediately grab me but almost me immediately crawling back for more as “Constellation Baby” is another gripping example of how to be shiny and glamorous while simultaneously having fun, not being another cookie-cutter pop act, and sounding good at the same time. Truly, my only lamentation of the whole of this record is how it’s not as long as the debut with half the songs off the album being less than three minutes which I can easily forgive as Mother Feather refuses to skimp on quality for anything.

I know many people were put off by Mother Feather’s debut especially people familiar with the label, but I implore you to give this band a chance. This isn’t a band that I’m expecting to change your life or flip the world of rock on its head, but it’s a damn good time that many acts strive years if not decades to achieve on a level like this. “Constellation Baby” is a great album front to back that shows this act yet again with a tantalizing sophomore record that’s already found a place in my heart.
