There are few styles that have as much variance and experimentation than metal, and I feel that’s something many of us have come to love and appreciate. But the merging of black metal and just about any sort of psychedelia is something that I’ve always been interested in seeing simply because it sounds so fucking awesome! Before tonight, though, the only band pulled it off was the stupendous Arkheth. Necandi Homines makes a claim in a very barren plane of black metal that many of us tend to forget about, and that’s exactly where this act thrives to create this monstrous EP.
The thing that Arkheth did with its take on psychedelic black metal was implementing so much experimentation into the mix that it culminated in the perfect mix that resulted in a true kaleidoscope of awe. Necandi Homines takes things in the opposite direction. That’s not to say “Black Hole” is boring by any means or lacks intrigue because these three tracks are dark hypnotism at its finest! Opting for a fusion of black and doom to bring about a truly desolate listen that I haven’t heard the likes of in far too long, Necandi Homines creates a wholly unique hellscape that’s void of all possible life. Each track is a truly hypnotic experience as “Black Hole” uses eerie rhythms and dark atmosphere topped with expertly executed instruments that help create this world that gnaws away at the spirit and stretches the body into a thin paste bit by bit. Not to mention how interesting Necandi Homines keeps everything despite not really doing anything fancy with the rhythms or overall execution outside making it sound as hellish as possible. “Black Hole” actually feels like your slowly being devoured by one as Necandi Homines can make the same rhythm over 12 minutes feel entertaining and glorious while also showing off impeccable musicianship that I was truly not expecting from a seemingly random EP like this. Throw on top of that the tastiest drum work I’ve heard since Inter Arma and vocals straight out of a nightmare, and we have got a formula for naught but a massive occult victory.
Sometimes you really need to look at the bottom of the underground to find something that you never knew you needed. Finding psychedelic black metal has been a long mission of mine that’s always sizzling while I listen to everything else around, but it’s thanks to bands like Necandi Homines that I keep looking for more from this style that I’ve always felt partial to. “Black Hole” is this exact thing so many of us have been looking for, and I’ll be damned before I take my eye off this band who I can see delivering one shocker time after time.
“Black Hole” releases via Third I Rex on September 30th!
