Psychlona – Mojo Rising

Going into the desert for a little bit of psychedelia with a blunt in hand is far from a new or fresh idea in the world of stoner music as legends like Brant Bjork have made art of the concept. Countless bands have tried their hand at it, and while it’s not exactly a difficult style to take on you can easily fall flat if you’re not really going for it. When bands do go for it, though, we get fantastic smoke-filled trips the likes of which Psychlona dish out with their fuzzy debut.

The beauty of these eight tracks come forth from its simplicity as Psychlona sticks true to the core tropes of what makes desert-psych such an enjoyable style, to begin with. There’s plenty to get a kick out of with “Mojo Rising” as it’s a perfect image of the genre from top to bottom as Psychlona gives us plenty of crunchy riffs covered deliciously by a thick layer of fuzz that permeates every track gloriously. With all that going on, it’s not hard to think that “Mojo Rising” might get boring pretty quickly, but I beg to differ. Psychlona manages to make each track vary enough to where you’re never listening to the same fucking basic formula over and over again like what so many bands in the world of desert-psych do. Instead, we’re treated to a solid array of different approaches as “Mojo Rising” easily transitions a full-on parade of riffs, a slow start before a second entrance that’s much more bombastic, and even a slower paced track that resonates with our into stoner doom fan wondrously to close out “Mojo Rising” in terrific fashion.

There may not be anything incredibly fancy or stylistically new with Psychlona sticking real close to the core ideals of desert-psych, but this is one of those fantastic instances where everything works out in the end as opposed to falling flat track after track. Desert-psych has seen a pretty solid year thus far with Brant Bjork most recently leading the charge, and it’s with “Mojo Rising” that the style can see even more tasteful representation for us to gush over.
