Domkraft – Flood

The concept of making doom or even sludge with a little bit of psychedelia is far from anything new as it’s been done for literally decades, but there’s always a way to keep it interesting even if you don’t do anything new to bring to the table in the long run. We see it all the time in modern doom and while it can sometimes be incredibly weary, there are plenty of acts that make it such a treat to have over and over again. To be real specific, it’s because of bands like Domkraft.

There’s nothing that Domkraft does here that we haven’t seen before, but this trio embraces it wholly in a way that doesn’t feel lazy or unimaginative like plenty of other acts do at the flick of a wrist. This is a by the books album that knows exactly what it is and knows just how to play off the strengths of the style, and we get to see it done in glorious fashion one track after another with “Flood”. With each track being covered in a very thin but potent layer of psychedelia and the occasional riffs that keep you coming back for yet another fix, Domkraft does an immaculate job at bringing their brand of doom metal to life while not being afraid to dabble in a little bit of sludge to give it a little extra kick that can be lacking in a record very similar to this. “Flood” also allows each one of its songs to mature from their humble beginnings to their bold endings which is something quite difficult to do, but Domkraft enables the entirety of this album to feel fresh whilst peppering in their own flavors to ensure it all feels original while at the same exact time also showing us the excellence behind Domkraft by peeling away one layer at a time.

To say this record is unique would be a gross understatement, but there’s loads of original character to it that allows “Flood” to become its own entity even if my initial listen of it left me desiring a little more. But allowing it to marinate and grow on me, it’s hard for me to really find anything unsightly about what Domkraft has done here and I have a sneaking suspicion that these guys can really impress if only given the chance.

“Flood” releases on October 19th via Blues Funeral Recordings!
