The art of the riff is something that a seemingly infinite number of bands try their hand at to all sorts of degrees of success with some coming off feeling lazy and unimagined while others wield the riffs incredibly well to create an enjoyable experience that just pulls you right in. The wide world of heavy rock can produce a massive number of acts that pull off the concept amazingly well, and the latest example of such I have of that glory comes from Nekromant with this new album being an absolute blast through and through.
While I’m more than comfortable labeling Nekromant as a heavy rock act, there’s an easy argument to call them metal as this trio easily implements plenty of edge and ferocity that takes things up a notch when the comparison of rock and metal comes into play. But with that small semantic aside, there’s no denying how fucking awesome of a show Nekromant puts on in full display with each track of “The Nekromant Lives” being an absolute riot. There’s little doing to get around the fact that Nekromant uses riffs with such expertise and precision that on paper it can seem tiresome at how many riffs are jammed into these nine tracks, but Nekromant’s execution is all but masterful as each one feels fresh and helps “The Nekromant Lives” feel like it’s progressing as an album rather than just a cheap shot at trying to get radio play or boosted plays as a single. It may seem like from my ranting that riffs galore are all that’s to be had with “The Nekromant Lives”, but there’s so much more to it. With clear influence from and spiritual tributes to the early heavyweights of metal like Black Sabbath and even modern acts like The Sword, Nekromant constantly walks the line of rock and metal to deliver to us an experience that’s all but delicious to the very end.
Not many acts are able to bring the best of both worlds and wrap them in a solid nine tracks for us to enjoy, but Nekromant does that without seeming to break a single sweat. Each year brings us a massive about of albums like this, but “The Nekromant Lives” is definitely an experience not worth passing up.
