Coffin Rot / Molder – Split

It’s no secret of that I love death metal in many of its numerous forms from the incredibly extravagant to the ridiculously simple. But, like all music, it depends on how it’s being presented and who’s behind the music that really makes the experience enjoyable if at all. Coffin Rot is a name that recently became known to me and their brand of filthy death metal is one I happily came crawling back for with this new offering, but this time they brought along the tasteful Molder for an explosive experience that only the underground can produce.

Easily, one of the best parts about following fresh acts that come sprawling forth from the fetid soil of the death metal underground is being able to recognize the acts that are a cut above the rest with quality and flavor as they soar above the competition with a ferocity that’s only matched by their sound and conviction. Coffin Rot is an act that I added to my list of bands that undoubtedly needed to have an eye kept on as their eponymous demo earlier this year, and already they’ve shown massive growth! By taking the reins first with this split with three tracks to slay, there’s not a single fucking thing wrong that Coffin Rot did as they absolutely decimate at every opportunity they’re given as their familiar brand of seething death metal is truly all-consuming and satisfyingly insidious! And then we have Molder, a name that I’ve heard here and there but never investigated, and holy shit do they go perfectly as a follow-up to Coffin Rot with their own set of three malicious tracks that suck away at your very soul and devours your flesh. Add a punk-like attitude to the mix and Molder is a concoction that’s no less than explosive as they parade around with entrails wrapped around themselves, screaming bloody fucking murder. Both bands also pay homage to death metal greats of before with Coffin Rot doing an exquisite recreation of Cancer’s “Hung, Drawn, and Quartered” and Molder tackling the Morgue classic “Repulsive Death”, and they couldn’t be any better or more faithful tributes if they tried and that only cements the excellence of these two acts for me even more!

A lot of times, this sort of material is the kind of stuff that I enjoy but then tend to not come back to for one reason or another, but there’s an intoxicating and satisfying sensation that’s at play here with this split. Both Coffin Rot and Molder make this split an absolute joy to listen to that really sucks you into a powerful vortex that fucking gets better and better with every single listen without fail. I knew both these acts were reputable going into this split, but it’s undeniable now to challenge the power that both these bands possess and I’d consider it heresy if you didn’t keep a tab on these fantastic budding acts.
