Much like grind, punk is something that I’ve always been interested in but have never really sat down to dive head first into that realm to really find something that I can latch onto for a while. The best example I have is Iron Reagan who has yet to do me wrong, but I’ve been wanting somewhere else to go. I still don’t have another sufficient answer to that, but finding small acts that catch my fancy do just well, and tonight it’s thanks to the Italian force of Hobos that has given me the latest taste of what I want.
The simplicity of punk is what I enjoy most about it with how upfront it is with the fury and aggressive nature that the vast majority of the bands within its bounds call to whenever new material is due, but sometimes a simple thing can become quite tedious to listen to over and over again. You want to hear something different, even if it’s only a little bit, and only just a little bit is exactly what Hobos provided with “Nell’Era Dell’Apparenza”. A tiny bit of death metal influence can go a long way, and Hobos clearly understands that as with their latest offering of ten tracks for “Nell’Era Dell’Apparenza” they did nothing but champion the lesser known and rarely mentioned style of death’n’roll in glorious fashion. The punk elements are what are at the forefront constantly, but it’s the combination of that with the death metal that makes Hobos such a powerful force for the entirety of this record from the vigorous riffage to the brash, unabashed attitude of constant offense, and pervasive presence that never wavers for even a moment. It’s simply intoxicating, to say the least, as Hobos do nothing but dominate with “Nell’Era Dell’Apparenza”, and come to the end of the record you’re simply left wanting more as these ten tracks hit home at every opportunity as Hobos delivers a set of material that’s all but delicious from beginning to end.
It’s often that obscure bands from anywhere on the planet can catch my attention simply due to the simple fact that they sound decent compared to many other acts that don’t feel like they’re even trying, but it’s with Hobos that we get nothing but glory. “Nell’Era Dell’Apparenza” is an album that I was certainly not expecting, but no doubt a key step in my journey to becoming far more familiar in the realm of punk.
