Evulse – Call of the Void

The glory of creating music is that of how you can make it anything you want, and for some people that means continuing the sound that they grew up with to keep the flame of the style going in the modern age. For many, that means keeping the menacing sound of old school death metal a force that will never die out in all of its magnificent glory. Some bands miss the mark by a little while others seem to be true naturals at it, and Evulse more than qualifies for the latter.

More often than not, I tend to notice how many bands doing anything that could be labeled as old school try to take the style they love and proceed to expand upon it in some capacity. Be it in the form of longer sounds or taking the sound down more modern routes sonically, old school death metal still manages to feel new after an innumerable amount of incarnations by an equally innumerable amount of bands. However, it’s with their debut demo of “Call of the Void” that Evulse has risen up from the seething bed of the underground to deliver us a slab of death metal that’s so filthy it’s no less than immensely infectious. Unlike other acts that I’ve come to know, Evulse has made their brand of old school death metal incredibly tight with no real room to breathe as this band does its dirty work with a widespread blow to the skull but with deadly potency, an indomitable presence, and insatiable appetite for gore. All in all, it’s the exact sort of thing that death metal fans can really get behind, and I can easily see this brand new act honing their vicious sound nicely as “Call of the Void” has got all the right components, but Evulse just needs to hone their sound. Even just a little could smash “Call of the Void”, in all of its seething excellence, right out of the water as we could see these viscera-drenched riffs, murderous vocals, and dangerously intoxicating tracks be toppled off their gruesome throne should Evulse properly hone this devilish sound.

Old school death metal rarely strikes me like this nowadays, but Evulse is clearly an exception to the greater rule. It took a few listens to really wrap my head around the turbulent chaos that’s at play with “Call of the Void”, but once I did, it was only bliss the likes of which only gore-drenched death metal can produce.

“Call of the Void” releases on February 15th via Godz ov War Productions!
