Equipoise – Demiurgus

Sitting down to listen to technical death metal is something that’s quite easy while difficult at the same time if you’re someone like me who has had a fair amount of experience with the style, but the speed and many layers of everything happening makes it difficult to tell what all is going on at just about any given moment. But if you ask me, that’s part of the fun. Such a dazzling display is something that not many other styles can pull off so well, and while there are many, many other bands that have approached the style and executed in masterful ways, it’s the new record from Equipoise that gives me one of the most flavorful listens of the style that I could actually enjoy for quite sometime.

Whether it be with lesser-known acts like Azooma or more renowned names such as Allegaeon, I’ve always found it to be the instruments that are the real appeal for technical death metal for me. Sure, the vocals always add a grand level of excellence to every experience of tech-death that I’ve come across, but the immensely flashy and ear-catching instruments that never know when to slow down are what keep me enthralled, and that’s no different as Equipoise kept me in their clutches throughout the whole of “Demiurgus”. I’ve seen many albums of the style like this where things never stay in the same place for long at all and the energy is always at an eleven, but it’s with these massive fourteen tracks that we get so much flavor and dynamic excellence permeating every moment to make what Equipoise has created here something that fits just about the quality that we’ve normally come to expect from such a constantly bombastic style. And given this is but the debut full-length from Equipoise, I can’t help but look at “Demiurgus” in a different light because if this is just the beginning then, surely, this is an act and an album to be heard by many and one to be greatly respected as not a single track is weak nor boring as each moment is jam-packed with excitement from beginning to end.

It could be easy for any band of the style to lose themselves in trying to make their sound flashy and colorful rather than focusing on that along with quality, but that’s far from an issue with Equipoise. There’s not a single thing that I would change about “Demiurgus” for it’s a record made for fans of the style and is the exact sort of thing that you can really lose yourself in almost instantly.
