It’s always whenever I listen to an album that I expect to not hear anything from the band in question for years at least unless some sort of double album bonanza is at play. So whenever I hear from a band any sooner than a year, it’s always an immense surprise. It’s a never-ending treat to see some tenacious bands populating both rock and metal as some just truly don’t know the meaning of rest and recover. Bort was an act I really wasn’t expecting to hear so soon, but it’s with a terrific EP that we get fresh riffage that’s just what the witch doctor ordered.

A debut is something that is always fantastic to see succeed in every single way, and to see Bort do that last year with “Crossing the Desert” made for promising hopes and a bright future for this band as they clearly sought to carry the torch of modern desert rock, stoner rock, and every other related style as they were true worshippers of the art of the riff wreathed in smoke. Never did I dare to think that they’d follow that up with something that absolutely blows that record out of the record, but somehow Bort has managed to accomplish that with their upcoming 5-track smasher of an EP, “The Unblinking Eye”! It’s with each successive song that Bort not only builds upon everything that they created with their debut but brought it all up to a crazy new level that makes it a real treat for those of us who want more quality desert rock in our lives as Bort allows “The Unblinking Eye” to constantly evolve from riff to riff. There’s not a single thing that isn’t risen to crazy new heights as Bort shows us with an incredibly gripping EP what it means to have talent in this style in the modern climate of the genre where we see plenty of mediocre acts, but it’s here that Bort shows us that they not just a one-off fad but instead the real deal that’s here to bring us excellence time after time.

Without a doubt in my words whatsoever, I can say that “The Unblinking Eye” is definitely one of my favorite EPs thus far in the year, and even though 2019 has already thrown us loads of fantastic acts making stupendous works it’s Bort that clearly stands out and represents their style like none others. April is already an absolute banger of a month for releases in my book, and Bort has only made it all the sweeter!
