I’ve always been a firm believer that, every now and then, you need to really shake your listening habits up just a little bit in order to reinvigorate the senses in a way. It’s something that I’ve said time and again on multiple occasions, and it’s tonight that I wanted to employ such a strategy yet again with some punk. Fortunately, the first go was the only one I needed as it’s with a sly combination of mostly punk with some dabbling in hardcore that Alouth has made quite a potent EP.
Something that I’ve always appreciated about the world of punk is how there’s a real no-nonsense attitude that permeates every single piece of material that comes flowing forth from the genre, and that really allows the style to have that signature ferocity and raw sound that it’s been known for. While Alouth clearly understands the world of punk itself, it’s with this vicious EP that we see this band embrace the roots of punk while also branching out just a little. All that in five songs that never stray too far over two minutes to make “Resentment” clock in under a cool ten minutes. What we get with this quick little rager is nothing different from what we’ve seen before, but that doesn’t take away from the power that Alouth puts on full display for the entirety of “Resentment”. Yet, they still find ways to shake things up like with the use of clean, melodic vocals for “Uncertainty” that acts as a fantastic contrast for the rest of the EP that really shows the scope and prowess Alouth has for just five quick bursts of music. It’s the sort of thing that really takes several listens to get a solid grip on as even though the songs come in incredibly lean cuts, there’s a good deal happening in less than ten minutes that two quick spins aren’t enough to really digest what “Resentment” has presented us with that allow this to be a really nice treat that punk has thrown our way.
Punk can easily be seen as a style that’s incredibly monotone, but I beg to differ as every now and then we get real good moments of organic diversity amongst the style that shows us there are plenty of quality acts out there willing to do their own thing, and Alouth is a great example of that. With only five tracks that wouldn’t be anywhere near enough for some people “Resentment” makes one hell of an impact that spins punk in a classy way that is intriguing all on its own.
