Masochist – Chaos of World Possession

I always like to mention every now and then about how I like to step away from my “usual” listening habits by checking out material that’s not normal for me that’s purely to freshen my palette just a bit. But, sometimes, life provides you with the exact opposite and you’re gifted material the likes of which you’ve heard time and time again. Yet, you can’t rip yourself away from it as it’s just too fucking tasty! Old school death metal is a tried and true display of power like few other styles, and it’s with Masochist that I’m brought back to that world with no less than exemplary material!

The beauty in this style lies in its simplicity and I find that to be a great strength as you can only do old school death metal in so many different before it deviates from that label, and it’s nice in a way to go into a style knowing precisely what you’re getting into. Listening to Masochist, it was awesome to hear something that felt straight out of the underground from decades ago coming back with a real bloody vengeance and I couldn’t have possibly asked for a better debut than what we got with “Chaos of World Possession”. While we get exactly what you’d expect from these six tracks, this EP is far from predictable as Masochist effortlessly combs through all the tricks and schemes that the style is known for and pulls them out of nowhere seemingly random in a process that was surely perfected through tedious trials by the band to result in such a potent explosion of blood and gore. The real talent comes in with Masochist currently only being a duo, and that’s quite impressive to me as we’ve all heard bands with twice or three times as many members who can’t produce material nearly this glorious on their first go. “Chaos of World Possession” takes what I can only relate to as early Corpsegrinder years and brings it into the modern world through a new lens, and in no way could I have asked for anything better than this absolute slaughter that Masochist has creating. Sure, this is far from anything new as I’ve already said multiple times, but that doesn’t take away from how deadly and excellent “Chaos of World Possession” has somehow become for a debut.

I will never understand how some people don’t like it when a band doesn’t do anything new to a style even though it’s clearly done with immense passion and power that how could you deny something like this? Masochist has created an album that’s far from pathetic in any means, and if this is but a glimmer of what the future of the style looks like then I can’t help but give it my resounding approval! Surely, “Chaos of World Possession” is just the start for this murderous act, and I can’t wait to see where else Masochist can take themselves in the future.
