Skimming the surface of many releases that end up quite popular on Bandcamp, I’ve come to recognize a pretty consistent trend that I must bright to light yet again: when done right, heavy psych can be the sort of thing to move an entire community of people. We’ve seen it many times over the years with many acts garnering loads of praise for their blends of heavy psych being the exact sort of material people can rally behind. Bright Curse was definitely one such ripple in the scene with their last album getting loads of praise, and it’s with their forthcoming effort that they’re on track to do the very same thing.
I was quite late to the train for the last Bright Curse album as I heard it but a few months ago, but it’s already that I was granted a response to that delicious rock experience by something that’s undoubtedly still a Bright Curse record from top to bottom but in a slightly different vein than it’s predecessor. Trading in the more rock-centric nature for a doomier approach, it’s with “Time of the Healer” that we see Bright Curse bring a very expansive and detailed experience amongst all the fuzz, riffage, and meandering psychedelia that’s strewn across the five tracks that are laid before us ever so carefully. And with most of the album’s track reaching lengths of over ten minutes, it’s clear with “Time of the Healer” that this band had loads to show us with this record and it’s only through dazzling colors and immersive smoke that we’re shown what this act is really capable of. Each track has it’s own psychedelic nature and hazier atmospheres to where you really feel as though you’re drifting through the record at a pace that’s both leisurely as well as immensely satisfying. That element is something that many heavy psych bands have come to master, but it’s through a fantastically paced listen and glorious musicianship that Bright Curse yet again pulls it off with a hitch.
It’s every now and then that I’ll come across a band like this, really dig what they’re doing, but eventually fall out of favor with them come more albums down the line. Sure, it’s all still quality in their own ways, but it’s through not doing anything new to grasp the attention is what loses me. Fortunately, Bright Curse refuses to do so as it’s with a different approach that “Time of the Healer” is given a brand new light to shine in, and I can’t help but see this record wash over the scene as it’s excellence is of the highest levels of infectious.
