Hardcore has long been a sound that’s intrigued me, but the vast majority of the time it only really catches my eye when it’s mixed with metal as it’s that extra edge that really gets me going when it’s done right. I’m sure there are hundreds of acts that bring such an idea to the table, but why not just go with a group that’s been doing it for thirty years if you’re craving some randomly? That’s precisely how I felt when I dove into Ringworm’s upcoming record, and it’s easily their most entrancing material that I’ve heard from them.
There’s always been something interesting about Ringworm’s sound that’s always brought me back over and over, and I think it’s simply how forward they are with their unyielding power that’s always gotten my thumbs up. Couldn’t tell you for sure with their previous releases since I’m not a regular listener, but it’s easily with “Death Becomes My Voice” that reason comes into the spotlight for why I enjoyed this record so. The 35 minutes of sheer aggression that’s thrown on the table with each of these eleven tracks is absolutely caustic in nature and something that could start a forest fire with just the first track alone showing unbridled fury that’s as intoxicatingly voracious as it is downright murderous. It’s not often that a constant rage that refuses to take on any sort of approachable form by the way of riffs or catchy melodies for even just one track, yet it’s only natural that Ringworm has mastered such a crafted by their eighth full-length album and it’s only on full display for the entirety of “Death Becomes My Voice”. Time can be a gift for a music group as easily as it could be a detriment but it is clearly on the side of Ringworm with this ferocious piece.
A band whose sound doesn’t really shift and change across the course of an album is, typically, something that turns me off about halfway through the listen. But it’s through sheer power and untouchable expertise that Ringworm has received my thumbs up with “Death Becomes My Voice”, and I can easily see myself returning time and again to immerse myself in this glorious chaos.
