It’s not uncommon by any means to see a band bring together the worlds of death and doom metal to create for us yet more examples of overwhelming heaviness that manages to come across as devilishly delicious and such. And it’s hard to stand out in such a style where just a single week could pass by and there could have been dozens of new entries added to the archives for the world of death/doom. But with unwavering passion and tantalizing quality, that didn’t stop Hex from powering forth with their vicious upcoming album of raw power.
It’s not too often that we get a band that just plays death/doom that doesn’t do something – anything! – to separate themselves from the mindless rabble just the tiniest bit. It doesn’t have to be anything groundbreaking or super innovative, but just eye-catching. We see acts like Illimitable Dolor bringing immense heaviness with great emotion to back it all up to just name one example, and, fortunately, Hex was more than prepared to show us what their brand of death/doom is all about in all of its fiery glory. Bringing to the table subtle but monumental riffs, breakdowns that we don’t really get all that often in this vein of death metal much less done with such exquisite precision, gripping interludes, and even guest vocals that bring another level of quality to “God Has No Name” that Hex exploited brilliantly at every opportunity. Every track is jam-packed with one staggering quality after another be it in the form of visceral death metal or the soul-grinding doom metal that when combined bring forth a reaper like few other bands can produce, and it haunts for the entirety of this effort. “God Has No Name” comes with a bold presence as well as advancement in the style that isn’t groundbreaking but still immensely flavorful as we’re greeted with an absolute smorgasbord of heaviness to make for a gorgeous meal that you never want to end as it’s all just so fucking delicious!
Hex brought together a good number of elements to this new record and sometimes that can prove to be a slight challenge to balance, but the experience of the musicians across their many years of work in music serves them immensely well here resulting in something that is just pristine. “God Has No Name” is an effort that’s unrelenting in its nature, welcoming through its riffage, and satisfying in its heaviness in ways that we constantly see hints of success of just that from multiple acts over the years, but it’s here that Hex could not have done a better job in execution.
“God Has No Name” releases on July 5th via Transcending Obscurity Records!
