There have been many times that the world of metal has tackled all sorts of themes considering religion from embracing it to denying it a place in the world. I, personally, am not one to get behind any religious message as I’m just here for the music, but any theme of such concept can make for something quite interesting if done properly. It’s with their debut EP that Plague Weaver has attempted to do that with just two tracks and it’s not half bad.
I couldn’t tell you what stance Plague Weaver has with the themes they go on about here as this is just their very first EP and we still have yet to see what they’re really capable of, but it’s in just over eight minutes that we get a pretty solid taste of what this act out of Ontario is going for. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before and I’m more than accepting of that as a band’s very first piece of public material rarely tends to be a wholly accurate depiction of the band’s sound in the future, but it’s here that I found something that I hope Plague Weaver keeps around. While the vocals are fine as they are and then surrounding rhythms, melodies, and such come together quite nicely, it’s the reigned in ferocity that’s unleashed in the most choice of moments that makes this pair of tracks something interesting to listen to at least a little. There’s not too much to really point out with this EP other than it’s a solid start that’s nothing to scoff at as it’s enjoyable, but it’s the flashes of talent that raises my eyebrows and gives me faith that Plague Weaver can really become something if given the chance after some time. That’s something that can be said for virtually every band if you believe it enough, but I have a firm gut feeling that Plague Weaver can dish out something venomous if they simply put their minds to it.
Debuts have long been the sort of thing that I take with a massive grain of salt, especially very short EPs like this, as there’s almost no way for us to know how the band in question is going to evolve their sound or change as many acts tweak their sound quite a bit after putting out their first efforts for idiots like me to talk words about and here. Even if they don’t change much, I’d have no issue whatsoever coming back time after time to hear Plague Weaver devastate my ears. This is as simple of a start that some could ask for, and I will definitely be coming back to this name to see where their sound will go. It’s not often by any means that I feel good about guessing a band’s future when all I have to go on is a measly two tracks, but there’s something about Plague Weaver that does it for me.
