There are many times where I’ve listened to thrash metal or punk and there’s a pervasive attitude about it all more often than not that embodies a “fuck you” mentality that’s as intoxicating as it is destructive. I’ve always enjoyed the concept, but it’s never crossed my mind to combine it with death metal even though that sounds like a pretty solid idea. Fortunately, I don’t have to guess what that might sound like as Hereza has come around with their third full-length album that’s a viciously heavy and damned good time from top to bottom.
Shit, just the name of this album alone should give you an idea as to what’s in store for you when you go to listen to it, and in no small way, Hereza delivers fucking excellent in every single blistering track that’s offered. There’s nothing but an absolutely damn good of a time that’s going on for the entirety of “Death Metal Drunks”, and Hereza know how to fucking party! Each and every track has enough death metal brutality to it that would catch the eye of many a purveyor of the style, but it’s the punk-esque attitude that really makes “Death Metal Drunks” the infectious haze that it is. From the quick burst songs that could last as little as 95 seconds to riffs that are sure to catch many peoples’ drifts right from that first hook to even a song that’s a joke to the very concept of cheap country music, there isn’t a damn thing about this rager of an album that Hereza didn’t pull off with surprising glory! It’s not often by any means whatsoever that we get such a care-free experience of death metal like this as everyone seems to be set on making albums focused explicitly on the gorier side of R-rated content, but it’s single-handedly with “Death Metal Drunks” that Hereza has made me want more of this shit! More beer and parties wreathed in corpses!
I, truly, never thought I’d be hearing something like this much less it being a fucking awesome piece that doesn’t know the meaning of a bad time and I could not be any more satisfied with this effort. “Death Metal Drunks” checks off all the boxes, and if Hereza is to continue down this path then I will be there to join them in their riots of blood and beer hoping the rest of you will fucking join in.
