It’s sometimes the small improvements that can make for a world of difference as even the smallest change in approach or execution can make the final product shine in an entirely new light. In the case of Le Menhir, I return to their sound with a quick little EP that may not exactly greatly expand their sound or be magnificent from top to bottom, but I find it far more entertaining than their previous EP from not even a year ago and it’s with this EP that my attention has certainly been earned.
I vividly remember my main issue with the debut from Le Menhir simply being the vocals, and I actively went to listen to that piece again before journeying into “Ombre” to remind myself. It’s not that they were bad, they just didn’t mix well with the post-doom sound that the band was throwing down with plenty of aptitude. With just three tracks, one of which is a meditative instrumental, Le Menhir has somehow made an EP that’s leagues beyond its predecessor in quality. Everything is brought together quite nicely as “Ombre” brings to us vocals that feel so much more refined while mixing together so much better with the post-doom surrounding them that’s crispy and delicious from beginning to end. While not bringing forth as much atmosphere as I might prefer from something in this style, there’s very little to the depths of “Ombre” that Le Menhir somehow doesn’t make endlessly intriguing to peer into as there’s always something to glean from and really sink your teeth into. There’s so much that could be built off of this very interesting EP, and I’ve no doubt that just from these three tracks Le Menhir could do something that’ll catch the attention of many as there’s talent to be had in every note of “Ombre” but it merely takes time to bud and I’m sure it will blossom quite nicely given the intrigue and entertainment that’s quite abundant in these three tracks.
Even a small improvement like more fitting vocals can make a band far more appealing, and I’m very glad to see that Le Menhir managed to improve so much with a seemingly small fix that enabled their music to become far more entertaining almost instantly. There’s still a far way to go, though, but I’ve no doubt that Le Menhir will easily find their way given the quality that “Ombre” has and teases.
“Ombre” releases on June 21st!
