It’s likely been years since any sort of punk rock really leaped out at me and I couldn’t help but listen to over and over again. I couldn’t even tell you the last piece of punk rock that I was genuinely excited about listening to, and I really wanted to remedy that tonight no matter what. Looking through my list of albums to go over, it was Sue that provided the only helping from anything related to punk rock, and it’s with this singular album that they demand attention and praise.
The beauty of punk rock has always been in its simplistic and raw nature for me. The pure idea of jamming out in your garage or basement with your friends and making shit music over and over before you make something that you’re truly proud of is what makes any form of rock such a unique euphoria that I hope we never get tired of, and you can really hear that in motion with “It Will Never End”. With an incredibly tumultuous life force that powers through every single moment of this debut, there’s not a single thing about this album that Sue didn’t execute with surprisingly potency and fascinating power that constantly impresses. There’s so much to sift through within the violent confines of this record that would fit perfectly in a basement of people just going insane with the music as Sue does no less than provide an experience that’s simply hypnotic in its intensity as “It Will Never End” churns along without any sort of concern for who gets in the way, and that really gives it an authentic punk texture. But, it’s important to know that Sue isn’t just some one-trick band that plays loud punk rock and nothing else. There’s a ton of that, sure, but it’s the finale where we see Sue really flip the script with their sound to provide us with a 14-minute long walk through the darkest corridors of the heart as we see all the anger and aggression drowned before the emotions that “It Will Never End” brings forth in gorgeous detail that’s a marvelous contrast from the rest of the album to make for an exceptionally powerful and well-rounded listen.
There is always a maddening number of albums that I listen to that make me want to investigate the respective styles more, and it’s single-handedly with this one that Sue has fueled me right up for more punk rock if it means there’s a chance of more glory like this. It’s a damned shame that “It Will Never End” actually does end for I could listen to this for quite some time, indeed.
