It’s not very often that bands seem to work on a somewhat reliable release schedule as it’s really anyone’s guess as to the amount of time any band will take between albums. On occasion, though, we’re able to pin down a band that gives us something at a consistently paced schedule. For the last five years, it’s every other year that I can trust the great fire below will deliver us a new offering from Firespawn. Their first two albums were simply glorious in their own rights and I still very much enjoy them today, but it’s by absolute miles that “Abominate” conquers all that they’ve done below.
Both “Shadow Realms” and “The Reprobate” were monolithic death metal records in every single way as they constantly provide me with fresh death metal that’s simply infectious to listen to every single time. Yet, neither of them fully won me over. They had my undivided attention, but I’ve never been able to say I love them. Fortunately, it’s with “Abominate” that Firespawn has created a record that I truly cannot get enough of as I am all but forced to listen to every track over and over again until my very skin starts peeling from how intense it all is. Everything that Firespawn has given us thus far has culminated to allow “Abominate” to become an unholy summit from which this band reigns supreme over as they dish out vicious riffs, lead intoxicating death marches, fiery solos that are all but infectious, musicianship that’s nothing short of class, and a brand of death metal that should be heralded as the modern legend of the genre that it is. There isn’t a single song off this record that doesn’t ooze with excellence and fire. From the smashing opening of “The Gallows End” to true bangers like “Godlessness”, each note is made with expert precision and deadly intent as Firespawn impresses, devastates, conquers, and slays everything in existence as “Abominate” churns out one eviscerating track after another. Come the end, your pathetic pulsating corpse will be cheering for more slaughter through raging war and apex blasphemy as Firespawn heralds in the very end of all.
There have been many times that clear talent has been met with power and execution that you simply can’t rip yourself away from, and Firespawn has undoubtedly created the epitome for modern death metal with this album alone. In no small way, “Abominate” could very well end up being the quintessential death metal album that this year will dish out for us, and I couldn’t be any happier as it is literally everything and so much more than we could ask for! Simply put, Firespawn has made a ten out of fucking ten record.
