There have been many times that I sat down to listen to some quality atmospheric black metal and I get exactly what I think I will. But, it’s every now and then that I hear a record that changes the script. It’s not always a massive change as even a little can be enough to make a record amazingly delicious to dive into. Bringing brutality with their blend of atmospheric black metal in a very tasteful amount, it’s with this EP that Aubzagl makes a solid impression.
The sheer influx of albums from this style alone since the rise of Bandcamp has been beyond astronomical so there’s so much to sift through that sometimes it can feel as though there aren’t any truly interesting bands of the sound out there to really sink our teeth into. But, should you be willing to put in the time to find something quality for the next eye-raising band can lead to something magnificent, indeed. Aubzagl may not be the most interesting black metal band that I’ve heard in the past year it’s definitely worth multiple investigations. Just one spin of “Eilifa Kuldinn” didn’t nearly encapsulate everything this album has to offer as it’s clear with just the few two tracks that Aubzagl has not only a clear understanding of the current state of the style, but they have the sight to try something different and the talent to pull it off. That makes for a deadly combination that then allows “Eilifa Kuldinn” to become material simply dripping in quality. We get everything that we would come to expect from the style, but there’s a special brand of intensity brought to the table for these eight tracks that really show us that Aubzagl is far from your run-of-the-mill atmospheric black metal act that could be swapped out with hundreds of others and sound exactly the same.
There’s something to be had here, and I can see this band growing remarkably if “Eilifa Kuldinn” is any sort of sign as to what we can come to expect from this act. It’s been far too long since an album like this has caught my eye in any capacity and Aubzagl capitalizes on every possible second of it.
