It’s been a long loved euphoria of mine to be able to sit back and just kick my feet up whilst listening to some rock that exudes a good time top to bottom as we’re given the very spirit of rock and roll. That’s a feeling that’s far from exclusive to me as it’s what draws many of us to rock, and it’s what’s helping many bands find their sound so they can provide their own feel-good rock as well. With a tasteful edge and plenty of quality, King of None’s latest album is nothing short of a damned good time.
More often than not, when I let myself become drowned in music the material in question tends to have a very prevalent psychedelic factor to it. Maybe some Flesh of the Stars or Zaum to help me find a spiritual center of sorts, and while King of None brings in a very light dosage of psychedelia to make their new album one that has plenty of sonic twists and turns, it’s with the six potent tracks that make up “Weightless Waters” with which this band shows us exactly how to make rock that covers a nice swathe of many different styles of the genre without feeling lost or incomplete in its overall sound. Everything about this record comes together immensely well so that every riff, every halt from the heavy, and every solo feels utterly delectable in the end as King of None perform them with utmost ease as they all coalesce to become factors of a rock album that knows exactly what it’s doing. And that’s what I like most about “Weightless Waters”. Never once does this album feel like it’s trying to step out of its shoes and sound like an influence of their’s, but, instead, taking on a mantle of their own to show us right from the beginning that King of None is not here to impersonate but to make a name for themselves. And that’s been done with amazing skill in every single one of these tracks.
The amount of bands that take straight from their influences without even adding personal touches is simply innumerable, and while I don’t like being against a band who enjoys playing what they do it just so boring so much of the time. That’s where they tend to fall flat and just lose us. But it’s with acts like King of None that we see personal touches added to a great extent with an immaculate talent to back it right up, and “Weightless Waters” couldn’t be any more scrumptious of an album if I wanted it to be.
