To make a soundtrack for the very end of the world is a very novel idea that has seen many attempts over the years across many different forms of music. Foreboding and thick, dark atmospheres with constant pressure are necessary in order to convey the sense of everything crushing in around you as existence simply snuffs itself out, and it’s immeasurably difficult to convey that through music at a consistent rate. But it’s through sheer persistence that Turin Horse manages to bring the sky down in the darkest of fashions.
From the very beginning of this fiery record do we get the understanding that Turin Horse isn’t here to bring us a beautiful menagerie of color or a thought-provoking set that will pluck at the heartstrings as they weave through trauma and travesty, but, instead, to show us the very ends of creation with a destructive force that is wielded with great precision and intent. Every single ounce of power that went into “Prohodna” was done with a great understanding of how to transform both doom and sludge into a devastating landslide that can wipe cities clean off their steeples with no effort. Turin Horse brings together potent riffage, pacing that’s simply tantalizing, and power that just seems to never run out to enable “Prohodna” into this monolithic work that could be what ancient cultures think of when they’ve nightmares about the end of days and Turin Horse is more than happy to provide such a brutal visage with this album.
It’s bleak, it’s devastating, and it’s rewarding in one of the most nihilistic ways with there being no salvation for light or its children as it’s with malicious intent that Turin Horse unleashes their fury upon the world with this album, and it’s nothing to scoff at. “Prohodna” brings no mercy to the table and if you go into it expecting anything short of a scathing experience then you’re in for a hell of a surprise.
