There are just some works of music that are simply bewildering to listen to no matter if it’s your first time hearing it or your hundredth. They’re the sort of material that captures the beauty of the stars and constantly makes us look inwards as each note gives us another reason to move forward in life. When such works come around it’s typically heralded by many, many people with the last YOB record being the most recent example. Not much of a splash has been made about this little EP from Daxma yet, but I firmly believe that I’m ahead of the crowds on this one as it’s this EP that paints one gorgeous illustration in the sand after another.
There are just two tracks that Daxma have dug up for this powerful little EP but it’s across approximately 25 minutes that this quintet from California gives us an astounding performance that is mesmerizing the likes of which I can only compare accurately to YOB and I mean that in all regards: power, beauty, quality, and craftsmanship. It’s with the first track that Daxma drives us straight into their gorgeous realm that feels very much like the cover art as “Ruins Upon Ruins” leads us through the cool desert under a star-littered sky as the landscape constantly provides us with something new to explore and lose ourselves in. That’s not even mentioning the stunning peaks and valleys between the heaviness and the placidity that Daxma effortlessly sifts through with expert precision. Then, with a slight change in pace, a monumental cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” stretched out into 11 minutes that could not have been executed any better or put together with any more care. “Ruins Upon Ruins” just comes together beautifully to where I’ve been listening to this glory for hours and not once has it lost a single piece of its beauty, its power, or its magnificence.
Truly, in no small way, I believe that Daxma has created a small masterpiece with this EP the likes of which should find a very earnest following that will come to worship this EP in all of its glory. Every single aspect about “Ruins Upon Ruins” checks off everything needed for a masterpiece, and Daxma delivers as every single turn and then some.
