The idea of a drug-fueled party that’s backed by cerebral rock and roll is one that has permeated the very core of the genre for decades now as it captures everything about the rebellious spirit of the genre perfectly. Just being able to have a gathering of sins and purge the soul of everything negative while the drums pound away and the vocals lead you into another dimension is a release like none other in the world of music. It’s not too often that I find a band that’s able to elicit such a concept brilliantly anymore, but it’s with ease that Cherbus has done just that with their brand new album.
There isn’t a single thing about this immensely colorful album that isn’t drenched in the atmosphere that I can only liken to that of an LSD-laced party where the music is loud and the bodies are just constantly moving to the beat at a zombie-like pace. Everything feels dreamlike as Cherubs marches without thought from one rhythm to the next as each track spread throughout “Immaculada High” feels devilishly intriguing to listen to while simultaneously being hypnotized. All the drums in these tracks are what really center you as it’s everything else about what Cherubs brings to the table here is meant to disorient you in very sneaky fashion as the vocals drift in and out of this album constantly like a wraith, the guitars are simply hypnotic in their simplest forms, the bass morphs reality with each string, and when brought together it all creates a crazy visual and aural experience that can feel just as satisfying as chaotic at the right moment. “Immaculada High” just works as this constantly moving machine of catchy rhythms pulled right from the dream dimension as Cherubs effortlessly guides us through the exceedingly weird to provide with an experience that is oddly rewarding by the end.
To create something weird and interesting is a concept far from original in today’s climate, but that doesn’t make the idea any less interesting when it’s done right as it is here. “Immaculada High” is made for those who want their rock to party but with such flair that it just simply can’t be put down even well after the album has ended.
