Besvärjelsen – Frost

It’s in the heat of the summer that fun times are surely to be had and plenty of great music is released. But it’s in the colder seasons of the year where people like me feel more comfortable with as the cool breezes chill our skin and the autumn air is the best kind of crispy. To be able to create that same sensation through music is to be an absolute master of your craft, and with their aptly named upcoming album of smooth and intoxicating excellence, Besvärjelsen has created an experience that should definitely be hailed as one of the year’s most gripping pieces.

Recorded in a cabin in the Swedish wilderness, there’s not a single part of what Besvärjelsen has created here that isn’t done with both immaculate precision and masterful quality. The entirety of this record felt like I was listening to so many different pieces of bands that I’ve come to revere rolled into a single package that just gives me chills at every note with the riffs and vocals that can easily be gorgeous, haunting, and gripping all within fifteen seconds. Perhaps it’s the combined might from past and current members of The Mist of Avalon, Dozer, and (my personal favorite of all these) Greenleaf that makes Besvärjelsen such an amazingly entertaining treat to behold every time I listen to it, but them all combining their might to create “Frost” is nothing short of staggering that I just cannot get over no matter how many times I listen to this world of Swedish glory that just keeps on giving.

What you’re immediately confronted with at the onset of “Frost” is rock with real power. The first track plants you on your feet to make you prepared for the rest of the album as Besvärjelsen is just getting things started, but it’s with subtle touches from the vocals that give you mild slaps across the face to prepare you for when shit really kicks into gear. And the second track brings that on almost instantly upon its start with that trend continuing for the entirety of “Frost” with very little deterrence or let up. Besvärjelsen brings riffs that crack the very sky as they proceed for days and days with the power dipping in and out at the deadliest of moments to provide either immense chugs that get your head banging or smooth flying through ethereal space dust as “Frost” takes you wherever it may. Top that off with vocals whose quality I cannot stress enough as they alone could keep me listening for days on end and Besvärjelsen has created a body of work that any band in the world would be immensely proud of making no matter how experienced they are. There’s so much to find within these five tracks of stoner rock mastery that it’s crazy for me to still behold its wonder even after listening to it countless times. More than likely, Besvärjelsen has made one of my favorite rock experiences of the year and probably my favorite of its kind since Black Space Riders and even the aforementioned Greenleaf.

At this point in doing these reviews, I usually know exactly what I want to say when I go to type about whatever album it is that I’m listening to. When I went to go type this madness up, I knew how I felt about Besvärjelsen clear as day but having to prevent myself from jus telling you over and over and over again to buy this piece as soon as possible was a great challenge for me as I couldn’t ask for anything more from you all. It’s my firm belief that this is one of the greatest works of its kind that this year has thrown our way, and Besvärjelsen wears that fact with pride as they know exactly what they’ve created here. “Frost” is a gripping album that’s satisfying beyond measure, and any person who’s lucky enough to hear this marvelous work will know they’ve found a future legend not long after they hit play.
