Most of the time when I go to listen to any sort of folk metal, I’m hoping to get an epic experience filled with all the parts of a fantastical journey that the style could ever possibly hope to bring to the table. But, I’ve always enjoyed more subdued takes as well as they can bring a different kind of flavor out of a style that I don’t spend enough time in. It’s with their humble debut that Eramaa brought just that to the table with their blend of folk metal that’s can easily shift from being peaceful to energetic.
It’s likely been since the debut of Open Access that I haven’t heard a humble debut like this that really shows potential as Eramaa has but three tracks to call its own but they do a great job in actually making it sound their own instead of a rip-off of some more well-known act of the style that would be immensely easy to copy. But, I can easily see Eramaa making out exactly like Open Access did when they finally created their first full-length: creating something very interesting and worth listening to. “Breathe” gives us a very organic and incredibly well-made take on folk metal that feels just as enjoyable to listen to with the entirety of your attention as much as it is to just turn it on and drift off to it as these three tracks become something to lose yourself in almost immediately. It’s from the folk instruments to the gorgeous vocals to the enchanting energy that weaves its way throughout the entirety of “Breathe” that make this debut a real treat to eat up time after time with the potential being tapped into and the excellence only showing a peek of its entirety that, ultimately, makes for a great experience that can easily be expanded upon if we give Eramaa just a little bit of time and patience.
This is a sound that I would absolutely love to see more of as Eramaa can clearly pull off the sound that they’re going for, and it sounds splendid in every single second! “Breathe” gives us so much to sink our teeth into while still only giving a hint into what this band is surely capable of to make the idea of a follow-up all the more tantalizing.
