Doem – The Fly & The Nail

The art of a really long track is one that I can instantly get behind as it’s easily my favorite thing to see in rock and metal as you can see the band in question pushing their sound to an extreme that we just don’t get to see very often. Many times, it’s very rewarding as well. We’ve gotten numerous examples of it being done in the realm of doom metal, but it’s post-rock that can easily produce something similar but it’s only until tonight that I’ve seen the style accomplish the feat. To say Doem did nothing but justice for the concept would be putting it poorly.

Going into this album under the knowledge that it’s meant to be heard as a single track and then seeing it was split up was a tad disappoint for me as I like listening to it all as one full continuous experience; that’s simply personal preference. The two tracks, both of which are named after the album title, are split almost perfectly so that the overall experience of “The Fly & The Nail” is taken down from a single 40-minute track to two tracks clocking in at 19 and 20 minutes individually, and Doem does a truly magnificent job at keeping you entranced all throughout! Each track is absolutely overflowing with the glorious atmospheres that post-rock normally touches on, but it’s here that it’s taken to a glorious extreme such that the mist with which Doem weave this album is such a joy to get lost in that by the time they clear you’re clamoring to be wrapped up by them yet again. Even brushing against the worlds of doom and sludge in perfect amounts without letting them take over the soundscape is done beautifully such that “The Fly & The Nail” has loads of peaks and valleys to savor as they each bring something new to the table to just add to the spectacular meal that Doem has laid before us in the most grandiose fashion. It all flows amazingly well to the point where you can fall back into this creation to just let “The Fly & The Nail” take you to spaces that post-rock doesn’t go often enough, and it really feels as though it couldn’t have been done any better.

This is but the first work that Doem has out which is a fact that deserves praise all on its own, but it’s more of the fact that I can just hear the potential that’s underneath the surface of this album that Doem can clearly tap into in order to create something interesting. Just imagine what they can do if they really brought all of it to the surface and created something wondrous! I’ve no doubt whatsoever that they can pull something like that off, and “The Fly & The Nail” is the perfect meal that’s more than delectable enough to hold us over until they bring forth the second course.
