Coffin Rot – A Monument to the Dead

Last year, there weren’t many other rising death metal bands that caught my eye the way Coffin Rot did. Their deadly set of demos and split with Molder were simply captivating for anyone who wanted to see the old school of death metal done justice to the highest degree from a fresh new act that could actually pull it off. But Coffin Rot is far from an act that’s to let their momentum die after all that as it’s with their first full-length album that we can get a proper helping of what toxic madness they’ve cooked up for us and what a splendid course of flesh that melts right off the bone.

Of course, the whole idea of bringing old school death metal back to life is emulating the classic albums from the classic bands that many of us have come to know and love for years if not decades at this point. It’s a formula, or at least an attempt at one, that countless bands have tried to accomplish for several years at this point, and only a handful has succeeded. Coffin Rot pulled it off with stunning magnificence last year but it is, undoubtedly, with “A Monument to the Dead” that they’ve reached a definite peak of brutal glory. Drawing from all over the old school soundscape from bands all across the globe, there isn’t a single iota of this vicious record that isn’t absolutely dripping with melting flesh or writhing, mucus-covered bugs as Coffin Rot constantly produces voracious riffs whose intensity are only matched by the raw badassery of the bass, the vocals that could peel the paint off of walls, and the drums that can easily bring forth the end of the world should they choose to. “A Monument to the Dead” drags up all the legions of undead that have ever existed, and they command it with absolute authority as they effortlessly cleave bone in all eight tracks of this massive record that show off every facet of just what exactly Coffin Rot is capable of.

Whether you want a saw leaving jagged wounds from the sheer power of what’s being put forth, blisters on all the body from the ungodly speed, or a slow peeling away at your very psyche with one calculated stroke after another that’s as slow as it is painful, “A Monument to the Dead” fucking has it all. Truly, in every form, Coffin Rot has delivered us a listen worth shuddering at.

“A Monument to the Dead” releases on October 18th via Rotted Life Records and Blood Harvest Records!
