Entrails – Rise of the Reaper

Every style seems to have a location or even a set of locations that always seem to provide the goods in massive quantities. Black metal has got Norway and Canada. Thrash has got Greece. Doom has got Finland and America. But it’s with death metal that we get quality from everywhere but Sweden produces it like nowhere else and there are loads of bands that can constantly bring it with consistent ferocity and talent. Entrails has been a name to know for any fan of Swedish death since their resurrection, and it’s with their newest offering that they only continue that trend.

It was with their last full-length offering, “World Inferno”, two years ago that I honestly thought we were going to get Entrails at their peak. That’s not to say I feel everything was would suck afterward, but Entrails has had constant line-up changes for multiple albums now and it was no different as we got closer to “Rise of the Reaper”. That being said, Entrails feels like one unit that has been going as a unit for several albums now, and it’s surprisingly potent at every turn! So much of “Rise of the Reaper” is just as infectious as plenty of other helpings that Entrails has thrown our way in the past and it’s equally powerful as this band continues to keep their place as one of the reigning champions of Swedish death metal as that army continues to grow in numbers every single year. Tremendous riffs paired with that trademarked Swedish sound we’ve all come to admire make up the bulk of what we’re given here and I couldn’t have asked for more given Entrails’ expertise that the name has demonstrated before and it continues to be a surprising display of greatness that’s nigh on infectious that takes me back to the first days where I was still new to Entrails and even the world of Swedish death. Right from the beginning, “Rise of the Reaper” delivers all the essential ingredients for an album of its kind in all the right quantities so that by the end we’ve been granted a very healthy and chaotic diet of intensity that is so rich in excellence that it’s hard not to fall right into as Entrails yet again creates an experience that’s a true highlight of the year when it comes to Swedish-born death metal.

Constant line-up changes can easily break a band’s momentum if they’re lucky enough to gain any, yet it’s with masterful maneuvering and plenty of expertise in their craft that Entrails has returned to us yet again to deliver us something that’s far from anything to scoff at. The ream of Swedish death constantly provides excellence if you’re looking for it, and it’s this year that “Rise of the Reaper” will stand proud alongside its colleagues like Paganizer, Endseeker, and Rogga Johansson as one of the premium releases for the genre that we’re to get this year by far.
