On the Sun – Solar Savior

What’s there not to like about some guys just getting together to play some riff-laden stoner rock? It’s easily one of the most fun styles you can play, I feel, with the high energy and fantastic vibes that are always flowing forth at every possible turn, and many bands out there have transformed such parties into works of art that aren’t to be fucked with. Such excellence certainly isn’t lost on newer bands and that goes double for On the Sun who really delivers in all six tracks that adorn their very fun new album.

Much like the modern landscape of heavy psych and other such contemporaries, stoner rock has become a real flavor to know since the blossoming of the internet with legions of people loving the sound enough to want to bring it to life. And while some may argue there’s hardly any change in the sound or any evolution in the style has taken place since that time, it’s almost undeniable to say that it’s both the new and the old bands that are continuing to make it a fucking damn good time to constantly come back to. On the Sun is far from an exception as it’s with their latest offering of “Solar Savior” that they take their riffs to the often visited regions of space to craft us a very worthy helping of stoner rock that any fan of the style can’t go wrong with. The whole of “Solar Savior” doesn’t disappoint in the slightest across its entirety with each riff bringing together something immensely delicious and a well-rounded experience that, of course, has some small dents in it but it’s far from anything to scoff at with loads of what makes the style great to begin with packed within these six tracks to make On the Sun a new name to know in a scene that has an absolute shit-ton of need-to-know bands.

With all the many different releases that are worth noting across this massive expanse of rock, it’s understandable but nonetheless sad to see many promising acts get swept under the radar in the miasma of other efforts but I refuse to let On the Sun become an example of just that for me. “Solar Savior” ticks off all the essential marks for a good record of its kind, and I can only see this as a glorious beginning should On the Sun power forward which I truly hope they do.
