It’s more often than not now that when I listen to anything related to doom it’s either material that offers an absolutely crushing experience or one that brings an absolute shit-ton of riffs to the table to just constantly shove them down your throat. On occasion, we’re treated to a very melancholic take on the style that actually doesn’t borrow from the land of death metal in any way and, instead, shines all on its own in fabulous black light. It’s with their first full-length album that Fvneral Fvkk has attempted just that, and succeeded spectacularly.

This isn’t the soul-crushing doom works that can be compared to the likes of Clouds or Officium Triste, though, which I find to be a good break in such a trend for me as too much depressing music can be a little bothersome after a while. But, that doesn’t mean that Fvneral Fvkk doesn’t really know how to pluck at the heartstrings in all the right places to make “Carnal Confessions” incredibly melancholic that’s powered by real soul and torment that isn’t as defeating as some other material but definitely a blow that’s not to be underestimated. It’s then mixed with a gripping sense of melody that wraps every single track of this potent album in a supreme atmosphere that all but permeates the soul of the listener such that every lyric of the immaculate vocals hits home, the rhythms are of the guitars never disappoint, the bass delivers at every turn, and the drums toll right along with a grand presence that rarely ever relents. All of that comes together magnificently such that “Carnal Confessions” is a real smasher of an album that I’d expect an exceptionally experienced band to be pulling off, but Fvneral Fvkk has pulled it off without a hitch on their first go at a full-length and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Every mark that they made throughout these eight tracks were nailed right on the head and executed with one grand performance after another.

Such a treat like this should not be ignored as it doesn’t come around often in this style with this much quality to be had, and it’s clear that “Carnal Confessions” is just the start for this band. Fvneral Fvkk displays a clear mastery over their craft that can’t be denied for its power nor its grandeur which is sure to only increase with time as this German act shows us what they’re made of.
