The amount of bands that try to do something different with any given sound is simply staggering to behold as it’s the dream of several different acts to bring forth an experience the likes of which we never had experienced before, but many tend to fall flat on their faces doing it. It’s not particularly their fault, either, simply because of how demanding and challenging such a task can be but that hasn’t deterred many. Whether or not Ploughshare sought to transcend much of extreme metal with their new caustic album I’m not sure, yet they’ve perfected the idea for a truly deadly work that is not to be underestimated.
It was with their first full-length album that Ploughshare made some waves last year, but I was late to that excitement as I only just listened to it a few days ago and that was only after listening to this little morsel with which they sought to devastate us with at the tail end of the year. But, this isn’;t just another work of black metal like what I was expecting when I first entered into the depths of “Tellurian Insurgency”, but, instead, it’s a work that brings together many other different forms of metal from death to black to even a little bit of doom while Ploughshare even dares to borrow elements from noise rock and even fucking post-punk to deliver us an experience that truly is not like many others we’ve seen before. Now, I’d personally say that their sound needs a little bit more refinement and fine-tuning before it could be something that can truly rattle my brain, but there’s still a grand chaos that adds a real layer of excellence to “Tellurian Insurgency” whose captivating madness is not lost on me. If Ploughshare meant to do so then they are a force to be reckoned with given how well the can conduct their own brand of madness, and if they could produce it multiple times for us in the future then, surely, “Tellurian Insurgency” is just the beginning of what we can come to expect from the eye-bleeding sights that Ploughshare pulls forth from the void and it’s only to get better as time drags on by.
There’s plenty of interesting madness that’s to be had all throughout this respectable EP, and I can’t help but feel that it’s just a momentary stepping stone for the likes of Ploughshare. Their unrelenting style and transcendent approach to extreme metal itself is incredibly interesting, to say the least, and it’s with “Tellurian Insurgency” that they should earn a cult for themselves not long after its release.
