It’s well within the capabilities of the expansive realm that is post-metal to create something that can truly cut deeper than any other music of its medium in such a way that’s as primal and raw as could be. With thick atmospheres and so much emotion to be brought forth, the style has long been ripe for material that makes you look inward to stare at yourself to see you for all that you all. I was not prepared for such a listen when I went into the second offering from the immensely act that’s just as fresh as it is promising: Golden Heir Sun.
I may be slightly misleading by calling this post-metal, but it’s definitely close albeit it shares loads of elements of drone and ambient in this mix to make for a truly dark and layered listen. There aren’t any drums in here whatsoever as there are only three things that Golden Heir Sun brings to the table for the entirety of the twenty minutes that “Holy The Abyss” encompasses: strings, vocals, and impenetrable atmospheres. Cult of Luna was the last time that I came across anything like this, but even then, Golden Heir Sun has gone somewhere completely different for this creation. For the whole of “Holy The Abyss”, you’ve nowhere to go but further in where Golden Heir Sun gently guides us through soundscapes that makes us face truths that we often refuse to admit are real, and it’s by the end of this magnificently immersive listen that we’re in a void that doesn’t seek to harm us like we might normally expect but, rather, it enlightens us for our benefit. It’s with the dissonant chords and vocals that are equal parts haunting and angelic that “Holy The Abyss” becomes an entity all on its own that I cannot help but suggest to anyone who wants to dive into a work that has an other-worldly essence to it that persists for the whole length of this tremendous song, and if this alone isn’t enough proof that Golden Heir Sun has almost instantly become an act to know then I don’t know what will.
The pragmatic monochromatic cover that goes along with “Holy The Abyss” is more than perfect for what we’re in for with this massive album, and I couldn’t be any more impressed with this work given this act has only started this year and the quality is already top, to say the least. Golden Heir Sun still has plenty to prove before we can start calling the name one to truly know for the style, but he’s definitely on track to quickly accomplish that.
