Orodruin – Ruins of Eternity

I always have liked myself a good Tolkien reference in metal whether it be the core theme to a band’s material or just in their name. When I first peered upon the name that is Orodruin, I figured I’d be in for more Tolkien black metal, but that’s quite far from the case as this band brings forth something I haven’t heard in some time: traditional doom. Such a thing isn’t done as often as it should be done anymore, but it’s here that these guys give us nine reasons as to why exactly it needs more of a presence in today’s landscape.

If I’m to be honest with you, I can’t even remember the last time I heard some traditional doom that actually left an impression on me in any sort of way, and that was just one of the things that helped make “Ruins of Eternity” stand out in a crowd that I just simply don’t see enough of. The whole world of traditional doom is absolutely filled with potential of all sorts as it’s slower rhythms and classic heavy sound is still ripe for new bands to infuse life into much like how old school death metal has been revived for years now with no sign of slowing down. It’s here with Orodruin that we see the style has though it was done in its golden years with so much mastery about this record that’s further surrounded by immense riffs, tremendous presence in every song, and power that’s nigh on potent such that it’s hard for any fan of doom to rip themselves away from given how enamoring “Ruins of Eternity” is track for track. If this were a template for every traditional doom record to go forward from now on, I couldn’t think of a better point to grow from given how awesome this album is right from the get-go and how well Orodruin can keep the momentum going even as they show that they can maneuver their way around the style with remarkable skill and undeniable craftsmanship the likes of which we get less than rarely.

The last quarter of the year has had plenty of surprises to throw our way that constantly keeps us on our toes, and Orodruin is a perfect example of that. “Ruins of Eternity” is a record that I cannot recommend highly enough for any fan of doom new or old, for once you step into this record it’s a listen that won’t let you leave until the very last note has faded away and you’re left wanting more.
