There are countless albums that come out from not just black metal but metal as a whole that is from an equally countless number of bands that think that speed and a fast pace can easily equal quality. Naturally, that’s not always the case. If done right, as I’m sure you know, a solid restriction to the material being mid-pace and a more focused approach to other areas of the work can result in something really tasty. Far from the first example to do so, Profeci’s newest work is a great example of how it’s done flawlessly.
Whenever I think of mid-paced black metal, my brain instantly goes towards the likes of Arkheth and Ende even though both of those bands can easily shift to something much faster or slower depending on what they’re going for, but what Profeci brings forth here for their latest work is a very well-rounded work that very much sticks to keeping all the material at the same pace. It makes for a delicious somewhat slow burn that makes each track progressively tastier every time you listen to it, and that’s not even taking into account the pure quality that every track of “Matecznik” slams before us! Everything that Profeci brings to the table here has plenty of an icy ferocity to it paired with a vicious burn that cuts through us like butter in every instance as “Matecznik” always lurches forth with real power and intent such that every song has a special flavor of its own that Profeci wields with true mastery. It’s the exact sort of material that I’m always looking for from the underground of metal, and it has never ceased to interest me to a high degree and that trend only continues down a glorious past with Profeci showing us how they doing it with loads of talent abound at every turn.
Whether it’s from the swapping limelight between strings, the vocals that are all but tantalizing, or the atmosphere itself, Profeci pulls it off spectacularly from every angle when creating the excellence that is this scathing record. So many bands try to bring something like this to our ears with not many being able to deliver the goods, but it’s beyond apparent here that “Matecznik” delivers in absolute heaps.
