Of all the death metal bands that I’ve come across over the years that have come out of the vast reaches of the underground, Molder is undoubtedly one of the bands that have stood out the most to me. Along with Coffin Rot, they’ve brought the riff-filled nastiness that so many people are looking for but their delivery is no less than top-tier for a band as new as they are. Their first full-length album is something that I’ve been hotly anticipating for some time, and it’s just as awesome as I could’ve hoped!
Granted, the great vast majority of this album – if not everything – comes from past demos and EPs that Molder has put out in the past which under normal circumstances would lead to this album feeling incredibly repetitive and not breaking any new ground whatsoever for this band. But, with a fresh coat of paint on their material, the whole of “Vanished Cadavers” takes on a life of its own that can be greatly enjoyed by longtime fans and newcomers alike. This is such an amazingly basic album, but everything that’s brought to the table here has been done with this album is such a joy to sink your teeth into because Molder has always known what they’re doing and they know how to always keep it fresh and exciting. With visceral imagery and gory topics that catch the fancy of any real death metal fan, there isn’t a single thing about “Vanished Cadavers” that doesn’t absolutely cater to someone who wants something truly nasty with an undeniably infectious nature that brings everything together far too well that stands at the very forefront of everything that is underground death metal, and Molder absolutely delivers from every possible angle no matter how you look at it.
This is a triumphant record that sees Molder come into their own properly after building it up after three years of constant phenomenal activity, and it wouldn’t be far off at all to consider them to be one of the most important bands of all of the death metal underground right now. Everything about “Vanished Cadavers” is everything that the death metal underground aspires to be a lot of the time, and if this album isn’t the modern epitome of that then I don’t know what fucking is.
