Dreichmere – The Fruit of Barren Fields

There are many things that could go into an album that can grab the attention and keep anybody listening, but one thing I prize above anything else is the ability to feel unique even if it’s just a little. It’s such a hard thing to accomplish with all the different acts that are out there now, but the right talent with the right minds behind it truly has no limitation as to what they can achieve. Just looking at the cover for Dreichmere’s upcoming album gave me such a feeling that we were to get something like that, but I’ve been wrong before. Fortunately, this album is so much more than what I had even hoped for at best before listening.

Just labeling this album as progressive death metal would be to quickly assume this album falls into some kind of sound that it’s not, but the description is not a bad one despite how misleading it can be. Dreichmere really explores everything possible that they could do for death metal throughout this upcoming effort, and to say that they took to areas I haven’t really been to before would be putting it far too lightly. Every piece of “The Fruit of Barren Fields” takes us to a completely fresh area that none of us could’ve been expecting for one reason or another, and Dreichmere plays off that unpreparedness to the fullest effect to make this whole album truly something to enjoy. From some slightly more straight forward material to lengthy pieces that one could find connections to acts like Agalloch, there are so many bases covered within the vast confines of “The Fruit of Barren Fields” that it takes multiple listens in order to get a hold on every proper morsel that Dreichmere serves up here in no less than exquisite fashion. This record is amazingly expansive but by no means merciful in its execution has we see tons of influence from all over the extreme metal landscape with black and doom also leaving their fingerprints across this record, and Dreichmere place them at the most opportune moments that allow them to have the absolute highest impact upon arrival. Everything about “The Fruit of Barren Fields” comes together far too well and still leaves me amazed after listening to it for hours, and there’s no doubt for me that this album is one of the most unique of its kind that I’ve heard for a long time.

We see many bands try something like this now and then, but it’s not often whatsoever that it actually works out because of one thing or another coming in the way of the band being able to bring it together properly, but that wasn’t a problem in the slightest with Dreichmere’s venture here and it pays off amazingly! “The Fruit of Barren Fields” has so much to offer for all sorts of fans, and I can honestly promise that if you can explore this album then you’re very much in for a surprise like few others.

“The Fruit of Barren Fields” releases on May 31st!
