The right approach to your material can really make or break an album, or, at the very least, greatly impact how interesting your work is in the first few seconds. When it comes down to psychedelia, I’ve always been a firm believer of the “slow and steady wins the race” mentality with build-ups and slow burns really delivering the goods in practically every instance. It’s always something that tends to hit all the right chords for me, and it’s with their latest work that Jackie Treehorn Ave. pulled off just that beautifully.
With a much heavier influence from the world of blues than many other psychedelic rock acts that I’ve heard, it’s at every turn in this album that Jackie Treehorn Ave. brings us a listen that is a pleasantly different tune than much of the competition even if it’s only by a little. At any point throughout “Nervous Breakdown Blues”, we’re treated to some delectable goodness that continuously comes to us in the form of either light riffage that’s as satisfying as any heavy riffs but with a delightfully dreamy vibe to it all or psychedelia that constantly ranges in its intensity from a mild presence to a very think blanket that covers everything it’s accompanied by. When it’s boiled all down, there isn’t a single thing that Jackie Treehorn Ave. has done here that isn’t pulled off to great effect! Every second of “Nervous Breakdown Blues” has something incredibly interesting to call its own, and should this album be heralded for any single aspect then it should be how well everything is brought together. A band can do psychedelia or riffs to an occasionally softer tone, but it doesn’t mean a thing if it’s not all brought together half decently, and Jackie Treehorn Ave. has done it all beautifully!
“Nervous Breakdown Blues” hits all the right notes at just the right times to grant us a listening experience that is no less than exquisite, and if this is just the tip of the iceberg for what this band has in store then I can’t wait to see what else is to come! Jackie Treehorn Ave. has created something that I can’t help but praise for all of its excellence for it is everything that I’ve been craving for recently and so much more.
