Dizygote – Freedom, Incorporated

Much like how black metal has seen a great surge in one-man acts in recent years, doom metal has had its own increase of the same but it’s with duos in this instance. Bands like Bell Witch and Eagle Twin are just two I can name off the top of my head that bring absolute glory to such a concept with far too many to name here, and it’s very much something that can lead to some damn awesome doom. Coming out of the upcoming album from the father-son duo of Dizygote, I can easily say these two have the potential to become something great.

It’s an odd thing to see so many doom duos pop up here and there over the years but, like with the black metal case, I find it very interesting because it’s something different and we’ve already seen it can be done to great effect. That especially goes for those that can pull off the riffs, heaviness, and attitude that’s needed in order to bring the desired sound to life. It goes without saying for me that Dizygote did a really solid job at doing so all throughout “Freedom, Incorporated” as there’s an absolute plethora of quality to latch onto in practically every track. But it’s clear that Dizygote still has a little way to go before becoming something very awesome, and while that’s incredibly understandable, the main problem I have with this album is that it often feels like the songs are going on for what feels like a whole minute longer than they should. It’s especially in the longer tracks of “Freedom, Incorporated” that I feel this is more prevalent with the shorter songs undoubtedly being Dizygote’s stronger material, but even then the rest of those songs are done pretty well up to that point.

Other than that one fumble, Dizygote has done a really bang-up job with this record in such a way that I can’t say that I didn’t have a good time listening to it, and I can’t help but see this duo grow into something really interesting in good time. “Freedom, Incorporated” has something for just about every fan of doom out there and I know that plenty will find this record to be something that demands to be heard, and rightfully so.

“Freedom, Incorporated” will be released in June!
