It doesn’t take a genius to know that anger of any kind plays a crucial part in an extremely large part of all music, and metal has been known to take that to another level with good reason. We’re always angry about something whether it’s being told to stay home, being lied to by someone you put faith in, seeing injustice without consequence, or quite literally anything else. Politics and religion have and always will be a topic that will bring conflict of many sorts simply because that’s just how shitty people are in general even if it doesn’t always result in that. Regardless, there will always be bands that seek to make music out of their frustrations whether to be trendy or to try and bring it to light. Heathen Beast has been one of the most extreme Indian acts that has been just as scathing with their music as they have been critical of their country’s actions. It’s been three years since their monumental album, “$cam”, and they refuse to sit in silence any longer.
I will not sit here and pretend to know about all the happenings in India and I highly suggest you do your own investigation to get a proper scope of what all is going down, but my one true portal into the country’s state has been Heathen Beast. With a tremendously raw approach and all-out fury poured into every second of their brand of black metal, they’ve only gotten better with age. “$cam” came as their first full-length album, and as their first true foray into grindcore with their sound, I couldn’t help but become instantly attached with it becoming one of my favorite albums of the year to still be a regular in my listening habits. Between then and now, they’ve released two stand-alone singles that I also highly suggest, but they were but a prelude to what they were cooking for their second full-length. Somehow taking things up another notch, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised But It Will Be Heard” does not beat around the bush in any form.
Just looking at this tracklist should tell you right off the bat how frustrated Heathen Beast is in their current form, and the word “frustrated” itself is putting it far too lightly. They are downright livid! Every single drop of “The Revolution”, whether it comes as a clip from various news networks or actual music, is a flurry of rage-induced cursing upon so much of what’s plaguing India in the eye of Heathen Beast, and they hold nothing back for even an instant. Whereas “$cam” put a great emphasis on melody in a lot of areas, it’s here throughout “The Revolution” that the sheer unbridled rage is what’s at the forefront even more so than before as Heathen Beast can barely contain themselves at any moment even when they do throw in some deliver riffage to sink their hooks even deeper into you. This is that exact kind of raw, uncompromising, and extremely caustic metal that so many people clamor for, but Heathen Beast has remained under the radar in the grand scheme of the underground which will hopefully change a little with the release of this absolute monster. It’s got so much to offer from its raw sound to its passionate anger to being one of the fiercest bands to ever spawn from the Indian subcontinent, and Heathen Beast makes it all work far too well for the entirety of “The Revolution” such that all twelve tracks are the epitome of an unhealthy addiction.
Three years may not seem like a lot of time between releases for any bands with most having that as the healthy space between records, but considering how much rage Heathen Beast always has with their material it’s a true wonder that they didn’t come out with more before this. Although, that’s far from a complaint for I’m sure that time allowed “The Revolution” to become the absolute monster that it is and I’ve no doubt that Heathen Beast achieved their goal with this album right out of the gate. This is a record meant for the angry with no outlet for their rage at the world, and should it come in the form of riffs or a tirade of incomprehensible fury, Heathen Beast will absolutely deliver the goods in heaps.
