Corpsing – Civilisation Under Nefarious Tyrants

The number of times that we’ve seen any kind of combination of black and death metal is so unfathomably high that we could likely talk about them for a decade straight and not come close to covering all of them. That makes it a little more difficult to make your sound more interesting because of the sheer overflow that the style has at almost all times. Thus, it makes an actually solid release all the more delicious when it’s done right like what we got here from the first full-length album from Corpsing in thirteen years.

That many years of hibernation can be a really difficult thing to come back from for any band of any kind, but that doesn’t stop many from trying. So, when it actually results in something interesting being done it makes the end result all the more interesting. With this year being the 20th anniversary of Corpsing’s first effort, what better way to celebrate than to release their third full-length? While the whole of “Civilisation Under Nefarious Tyrants” is pretty standard when taking into consideration the vast majority of the black/death metal realm, Corpsing does a very solid job at enabling this album to stand confidently on its own. Bringing together many different ideas that have made the style such a wide landscape of sound and intrigue for many years now, much of this album succeeds when it comes to the speed and intensity departments with the shorter songs doing it a little better in my opinion, but the longer tracks do bring a couple of bits from doom here and there for even more flavor and I’d be lying if I said that Corpsing didn’t also do a solid job with that aspect as well. “Civilisation Under Nefarious Tyrants” accomplishes at trying to do a lot while bringing it together in a good enough fashion that Corpsing is able to mold it into practically whatever form they please, and just about every single form they take is something that’s pretty damn easy to get into for any fan of the style whether it be because of the fiery nature, the quality, or old-time fans of Corpsing rising back up from the depths.

This is far from anything that I’d consider a must-hear album for any fan of the style, but there truly is nothing wrong with this release that I can find even after listening to it for hours. Corpsing has done a more than bang-up job with this album and proves right off the bat that a thirteen-year gap between full-lengths is something that they can overcome quite easily as we can see here throughout literally every single second that “Civilisation Under Nefarious Tyrants” puts before us.
